Step 1, Calculate the optimal average speed for a voyage.

If a lot of cargo is available (high freight rates) it might be more economical to speed up, consume more fuel and start early with the next voyage.

In case freight rates are low. It might be wise to slow down to reduce speed and therefore consumption.

Step 2, calculate the optimal speed for each part of the voyage.

If transiting SECA area’s it might be advisable to adjust the speed during the voyage several times.

Expensive fuel, low speed. Cheap fuel high speed.

Step 3, if using a scrubber or shaft generator. calculate the optimal speed and modus of use.

In some circumstances, it might be useful to lower down the RPM of the main engine and start a diesel generator instead of using the shaft generator. The main engine will turn at an lower RPM and the ship consumes considerably less.
